Anthem Lights- Anthem Lights

Anthem Lights is a newer Christian band on the scene. The band is made up of four members: Alan Powell, Chad Graham, Kyle Kupecky, and Caleb Grimm. It started as a solo project for Chad with Alan helping write songs in 2007 and soon morphed into what we now know as Anthem Lights. They have a Christian Pop sound, but when listening to the music you feel like you're there more instead of just listening to an ipod, cd, or mp3. They say they also wanted the "live instrumentation" feel which they definitely have.

Alan Powell say's this when talking about one of their main messages and purpose, “As followers of Christ, we were not made for this world...We don’t belong here. And all the self-doubt and insecurity and struggling to fit in, it’s all part of believing the lie that we’re supposed to be ‘at home’ here. God created us in His image—there’s nothing to doubt about that! We’re here to love others and be Christ in the world. The closer we get to Christ, to being what we were created to be in this world, our value of what this world values begins to fade.”

Here's the review song by song!

"Can't Shut Up" - This was the first single released of there's on the radio (at least at the station where I live. This song opens with I had a heartbeat and I was breathing, and I kept going and going without a reason. I was living just to be living, until He really gave me life. Which is just saying before we accept Christ as our personal Lord and Savior we are just living to live. As I'm going through the lyrics I see there is so much I could touch on, so I'll just say that the chorus is saying We "Can't Shut Up" about Christ's love and we shouldn't keep it a secret. As Christians Christ has called us to spread the good news to others in The Great Commission:  Matthew 28: 19. Then the bridge goes to say Out of the darkness and into the light, When blind men can see it's a beautiful sight.  That is just so beautiful to picture. Just think about it.
The second verse is the story about David from the Bible. The chorus goes: I wanna know you like that, to live, to love, with everything I am to give it all. I wanna know you like that to become a man after your heart and not look back, I wanna know you like that. As Christians that should be what we strive for. To live and love like Christ loved us, and to strive to be like David who is known as the Man after God's heart.

"Circles"  I love this song, because even though I don't always want to admit it, it's true. As humans we go around in circles. I love the opening line Ready, set, go, this is take 37 let it roll... I love that because it catches you because it is different, but it also makes you think. It's saying ok, I screwed up, let's try again and keep the camera's rolling (because you can't stop life). This song goes to show how we go back to something we did that we shouldn't because it's comfortable. Also the chorus says I was never meant to travel on my own, so no matter what I try if I try it alone, I'm going bak and forth and then forth and then back and then round in circles. That just goes to show we're nothing without Christ and we need him which leads me to the last line of the second verse, which get's me every time along with the bridge.  I know I need to change because.  That is a big step admitting you need to change, and then the bridge is just as good.

"Can't Get Over You" This is the first Anthem Lights song I fell in love with. It is a pure praise/worship song to God. I love the whole song, but I will start with the chorus Hold me, pull me just a little bit closer, I don't wanna lose this moment, Your love has covered me and now I can't get over You, I can't get over you, I can't get over You, I just can't get over you. When I am listening to or singing this song, it just becomes a prayer. The other part of the song I want to mention is when it says, I can't get over the way Your love stays the same Oh Lord. I love that because it is always a good reminder to remember God's love is constant and never changing, we're the ones who change, sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad.

"Stranger" This song has goes hand in hand with Allan's quote at the beginning of this post. This whole song to me is an Anthem and constant reminder not to settle for the world's ways, but God's. The chorus goes I am a stranger in this world just passing through, waiting on the Son to come down, waiting on the Son to come down, I know that I will be on my way real soon, waiting on the Son to come down, I won't be home til I'm with You. For Christians this is so true and so real, and it get's me excited for what's to come. I also love the line in the second verse that says, I don't belong, I speak the language but still I can't understand... Which means we know how to live here, but we don't understand everything that's going on, or why people do things that they do.

"Outta My Mind" This is my favorite fast song on the CD hands down. And this is also personal for me as well. The first verse is basically saying how you can get down because everything is going so well for everyone else...but you focus on how it's not going well for you. ex. People are getting engaged and I'm single...instead of being down about not being in their position remember God has a plan and to be happy for the other people. The chorus goes, Get me outta my mind, and into your heart it's not about me it's not about me, So i'm gunna start playing a part in  your design, now is the time, get me outta my mind, outta my mind. The second verse then goes on to realize that God has a bigger picture, and you have to look outside of just you. It's such a good and powerful song, and helps me get my mind in the right mindset, if I'm focused on me me me.

"Lifeline" This song is all about God being our lifeline. We can't do this on our own. I really love the verses in this song. Don't get me wrong I like the chorus too, but I love the verses here. I'll write the first one, and you'll just have to listen to get the second. The water was getting higher and higher, my arms kept getting more and more tired, and the harder I would try, the further I would dive down. So I gave up and I finally let go, stop trying to save myself and be my own hero. And when I opened my eyes, that's when I realized, You were there the whole time. That verse is to good because the weight of the world can come crashing down on us and we can get tired of trying to go at it alone, so we want to put our trust in God and lean on Him, because he is there, just waiting for us to grab hold!

"Lighthouse"  Do you remember singing "This little light of mine" when you were younger? Well this song has the same message. We are to be His light! Going back also to the message of The Great Commission Matthew 28:19, "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..." Therefore as Anthem Lights would say It's up to you, it's up to me, to be the lighthouse, they should know they're not alone, so shine so they can see the lighthouse, and find they're way back home. It's also really cool how during the bridge in "Lighthouse" they reference "Lifeline". The song also says, Don't you remember how you felt til someone showed you the way,  which also puts the message into perspective, especially if you didn't get saved at a young age. So LIGHTBULBS, don't forget to be the LIGHTHOUSE!!!

"Freedom Into Slavery" This is also one of my absolute favorite songs on the album. It is an very honest song, and if you're honest with yourself you know it's true. A few lines I'm going to highlight are If I didn't know that you would forgive me, if it wasn't so real...with forgive and forget left out would I still think all this wrong was ok. That is powerful right there. Would we do things we do if we didn't know Christ would forgive us. Whether it's gossiping, drugs, swearing, adultery, breaking the 10 Commandments, no matter how big or little it is, would we do it, if we wouldn't be forgiven. I'd want to say no, but because we know we will be forgiven we continue to gossip, watch movies that aren't the best, etc. That's is how we are turning freedom into slavery. Why do I fade black and white to grey, when the lines are clearly drawn Think about ways that you have turned your freedom into slavery. It shouldn't be a, I'm going to do this because He will forgive me, he wants us to turn from our evil ways as well. Ponder this song.

"Where The Light It"  This song, also is about being the Light. Jesus is the Light of the world, and He wants us to be the His light. In this song it tells about a ton of different scenario's with light. It also emphasizes that Darkness doesn't stand a chance. Therefore I just want us to remember that, with Christ,  darkness isn't going to win! We have to remember that Christ wins, no matter what we're going through, and try to be the Light to others!
